Lhasa
Apso Care

Lhasa
Apsos are a small non-sporting breed of dog
The
Lhasa Apso originated in Tibet, and were only bred by holy men and
nobles. Thought to bring good luck, this breed was considered to be
sacred. For this reason, the Lhasa were used as watchdogs in
monasteries for over 2000 years.
They are highly intelligent, with keen instinct and acute hearing.
Character
The Lhasa Apso is a dignified
breed. Although this canine has a bit of a clownish personality, he
prefers being a
companion to a simple pet. The Lhasa’s temperament is well defined.
He is independent, affectionate and stubborn.
He requires understanding and
patience and does not respond well to harsh and strict discipline.
He is clear-headed and wary of people outside that of his familiar
circle.
They conform easily to their masters environment and schedule,
especially when it comes to sleeping patterns and walks.
Coat
The Lhasa Apso has a heavy
double-coat that is draped over the entire body.
Their long coat serves as an
insulation barrier, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the
summer.
The coat grows to floor length,
even covering the eyes, which are protected by long eyelashes.
The Lhasa coat colors include
gold,
smoke, parti, and slate.
The Lhasa Apso requires daily
brushing to prevent tangles and mats.
They may be bathed or dry
shampooed on a regular basis or as necessary.
Rregular cleaning of the eyes
and ears are important.
Average lifespan is 15 years.
They do not
like to be left alone for extended periods of time.
The Lhasa Apso
temperament is unique joyful, mischievous and clown like, as well as
regal, dignified and aloof.
Because of their expressive facial features, owners often remark on
their "human like" qualities and sensitivity to human feelings,
claiming their dogs "can almost talk." Probably no two Lhasa Apso's are
alike.
